PowerBI Custom Connector and On-Premises Data Gateway

This video discusses how to set up an on-premises data gateway for use with PowerBI.

Prerequisites

  • Windows 64-bit virtual machine

  • .NET Framework 4.8 or higher

  • VM set to High Performance

  • Power BI Pro or Enterprise account

  • HazView API key


Step 1: Install On-Premises Data Gateway

  1. Download the Power BI On-Premises Data Gateway from Microsoft

  2. Run the installer on your virtual machine

  3. Log in using your Power BI account

  4. Select Register a new gateway on this computer

  5. Enter a gateway name


Step 2: Install HazView Custom Connector

  1. Open the Gateway application

  2. Navigate to the Connectors tab

  3. Note the folder directory shown

  4. Download the HazView connector:

    • Go to: support.hazview.com

    • Navigate to:

      • How To Guides

      • HazView Core

      • Power BI Integration in Admin Controls

    • Download the .mez file

  5. Copy the .mez file into the connectors folder


Step 3: Restart Gateway Service

  1. Go to Service Settings

  2. Click Restart Now

  3. Confirm HazView appears under connectors

  4. Ensure status shows Online and ready to use


Step 4: Create Power BI Workspace

  1. Go to: app.powerbi.com

  2. Click Create Workspace

  3. Enter workspace name

  4. Select Power BI Pro

  5. Click Apply


Step 5: Enable Gateway in Power BI

  1. Click Settings (top right)

  2. Go to Manage Connections and Gateways

  3. Select On-Premises Data Gateways

  4. Find your gateway

  5. Click Settings

  6. Enable:

    • Allow cloud data sources

    • Allow custom data connectors

  7. Click Save


Step 6: Create Connection

  1. Go to Connections

  2. Click New

  3. Select your gateway cluster

  4. Enter connection name

  5. Set:

    • Connection Type: HazView connector

    • Server URL: HazView server URL (Contact HazView Admin if you don't have access/details at 0423 912 557)

    • API Key: Your HazView API key (Contact HazView Admin if you don't have access/details at 0423 912 557)

  6. Set Privacy Level = Public

  7. Skip test connection

  8. Click Create


Step 7: Upload Semantic Model

  1. Open your Power BI report

  2. Click Publish

  3. Select your workspace


Step 8: Map Gateway to Dataset

  1. Go to your workspace

  2. Locate the dataset

  3. Click More Options → Settings

  4. Open Gateway and Cloud Connections

  5. Enable your gateway

  6. Map it to your HazView connection

  7. Click Apply


Step 9: Test Data Refresh

  1. Select your dataset

  2. Click Refresh

  3. Click Refresh Now

  4. Confirm successful update timestamp


Step 10: Set Scheduled Refresh

  1. Go to dataset Settings

  2. Configure refresh schedule

  3. Recommended: Every 2 hours


Outcome

  • Gateway installed and running

  • HazView API connected

  • Dataset refreshing successfully

  • Reports ready for dashboard creation
